The short answer
If you want backup for a handful of essentials during occasional outages, at the lowest upfront cost and with no construction, buy a large portable power station. If you want automatic, whole-home backup that works whether you are home or not, and that can pair with rooftop solar for daily savings, buy a permanently installed home battery.
The price gap is the story. The portable examples below cost $2,799 to $2,999.99 for the unit alone. A single installed home battery costs about five times that: EnergySage data put a typical 13.5 kWh home battery at about $15,650 installed before incentives in the first half of 2026, and a Powerwall 3 at $13,473 installed on average. In return, the installed battery delivers roughly three times the storage of one portable, more continuous power, and a switchover you do not have to manage.
Renters, people who move often, and anyone whose outages are short and infrequent usually get better value from the portable. Homeowners with solar, loads that cannot drop, well pumps, or frequent multi-day outages usually get better value from the installed system.

The portable option, in detail
The home-backup class of portable station is no longer a small camping battery. Two current examples show the range:
EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3. EcoFlow’s US store listed the base unit at $2,799 in November 2026. It stores 4,096Wh, delivers 4,000W continuous AC output (6,000W with X-Boost, 8,000W surge), and accepts up to 2,600W of solar input. One unit expands to 12 kWh with two extra batteries. It uses LFP cells rated at 4,000 cycles to 80% capacity, weighs 113.54 lb, and carries a 5-year warranty. It can output 120V and 240V, but not both at the same time, a limit EcoFlow states in its own FAQ.
Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus. This model replaced the original F3800 in the US. Anker’s US store listed it at $2,999.99. It stores 3,840Wh, delivers 6,000W of 120V/240V output, and expands to 26.9 kWh with six expansion batteries. Anker rates its LFP pack at 3,000+ cycles, lists 3,200W of solar input, a weight of 136.7 lb, and a 5-year warranty with a stated lifespan of 10+ years.
Used with extension cords, either unit will run a refrigerator, lights, a router, phones, and a TV. Runtime depends on what you plug in: as a rough planning estimate, 3.8 to 4.1 kWh is a day or less of careful essentials use, not a full house at normal consumption. Add a transfer switch, inlet box, or a maker panel such as EcoFlow’s Smart Home Panel 2, and the same station can power selected house circuits instead, including 240V loads. That upgrade is not free or fully DIY. Published 2026 guides put a manual transfer switch at roughly $800 to $1,700 installed for a typical 6 to 10-circuit job, with ranges up to $2,700 for harder jobs. EcoFlow’s Smart Home Panel 2 was listed at about $1,499 to $1,599 in retailer and installer listings; its total installed cost is [UNVERIFIED], because EcoFlow does not publish an installed price.
Portable power station: pros and cons
Pros
- Lowest upfront cost by a wide margin, and no permit for basic plug-in use
- Works the day it arrives, and moves with you to a new home, an RV, or a job site
- Silent, fume-free, and safe to run indoors, unlike a fuel generator
- Expandable in steps as your budget allows
Cons
- Small storage compared with an installed battery, so multi-day outages mean rationing or a solar or generator recharge
- You are the transfer switch with cords: someone has to be home, wheel it out, and plug loads in
- Shorter warranty, 5 years on both examples, and heavy despite the wheels
- 120V and 240V limits, circuit limits, and surge limits require load discipline
The installed home battery, in detail
Tesla Powerwall 3. Tesla’s current US model stores 13.5 kWh, delivers up to 11.5 kW continuous power in the US split-phase specification, has a built-in solar inverter supporting up to 20 kW of solar input, can start loads up to 185A LRA, scales to up to four units, and carries a 10-year warranty. Tesla does not publish a US list price, so the hardware-only price is [UNVERIFIED]. The useful planning figure is installed: about $13,473 on average in EnergySage’s 2026 data, with other 2026 guides citing a typical range of $12,000 to $16,200 including gateway, electrical work, and permits.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P and 10C. Enphase takes a modular route. The 5P stores 5.0 kWh per unit, delivers 3.84 kW continuous and 7.68 kW peak for 3 seconds, and carries a 15-year warranty up to 6,000 cycles. The newer 10C stores 10 kWh, delivers 7.08 kW continuous, and carries the same 15-year, 6,000-cycle warranty. Both need additional Enphase equipment for backup. Solar.com’s September 2026 data put a backup-capable 5P at a median of about $10,650 installed when added with solar. A reliable national installed average for a single 10C is [UNVERIFIED]: installers quote it per project and third-party estimates vary widely, so get itemized local quotes.
An installed battery is wired to your panel through a gateway or controller. When the grid fails it switches automatically, keeps hardwired loads such as a furnace blower, well pump, or sump pump running, and, with solar, can recharge each day of an outage. It can also store cheap off-peak or solar power for evening use.
One cost change matters for 2026 budgets: multiple 2026 pricing sources report that the 30% federal residential clean energy credit (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025. Do not subtract it from a 2026 quote. State and utility incentives may still apply.
Home battery: pros and cons
Pros
- Automatic backup for whole-home or selected circuits, including hardwired loads, with no one home
- Far more storage and power per system, and expandable: up to 54 kWh with four Powerwall 3 units
- Pairs with rooftop solar for daily bill savings as well as outages
- Longer warranties: 10 years for Powerwall 3, 15 years for Enphase IQ batteries
Cons
- High installed cost, and quotes vary widely with panel upgrades, trenching, and backup scope
- Requires permits, inspection, utility approval, and often a wait for an installer slot
- Fixed to the house, so the investment stays behind if you move
- No federal tax credit for a 2026 purchase, per the sources above
Decision guide
Choose the portable power station if…
- Your outages are occasional and usually under a day, and a fridge, lights, internet, and a few outlets are enough
- You rent, expect to move, or cannot get panel work approved
- Your budget is under about $5,000 all-in, even with a transfer switch
- You also want power for an RV, a workshop, or a second property
Choose the home battery if…
- Outages are frequent, long, or happen when no one is home to set up equipment
- You need hardwired loads backed up automatically: furnace, well pump, sump pump, or a full central air system
- You have rooftop solar, or plan to add it, and want storage working for you every day, not only in a blackout
- You plan to stay in the home long enough for a 10 to 15-year warranty to mean something
Consider a hybrid path if… you start with a large portable now and add a transfer switch later. That spreads the cost and covers selected circuits neatly. It will not match an installed battery on capacity or automation, and the switch work still needs an electrician and, in most jurisdictions, a permit.
FAQ
Can a portable power station run central air?
Sometimes, briefly, and only the larger 240V models. EcoFlow says the DELTA Pro 3 can run a 3-ton central AC under test conditions with a soft starter, and Anker markets the F3800 Plus for loads up to central AC. Starting current, not running watts, is the usual failure point, and AC will drain 4 kWh quickly. Treat it as possible, not guaranteed, for your system.
Do I need a permit for a portable power station?
Not for plugging appliances directly into the unit. Connecting it to your house wiring through a transfer switch, inlet box, or smart panel is electrical work that typically requires a licensed electrician, a permit, and an inspection. Rules vary by jurisdiction.
How long will each option last?
On cycles, the DELTA Pro 3 is rated 4,000 cycles to 80% capacity and the F3800 Plus 3,000+ cycles, both with 5-year warranties. Installed batteries carry longer cover: 10 years for Powerwall 3 and 15 years or 6,000 cycles for Enphase IQ batteries. Calendar life depends on temperature, depth of discharge, and how often you cycle the battery.
Will a home battery pay for itself?
For most homes, backup value, not bill savings, is the main reason to buy. Savings depend on solar production, time-of-use rates, and state or utility programs. With no federal credit in 2026, payback from bill savings alone is slower than older articles suggest. Ask installers to show savings assumptions in writing.
Can I take a home battery when I move?
Practically, no. It is permitted, wired infrastructure tied to that home’s panel and utility interconnection. A portable station goes in the car.
